Time to get ready for London 2012
Slowly slowly the Olympic Games are getting closer. It’s the first time I had the chance to follow, observe and work with some of the top athletes during their preparation. It’s almost impossible to imagine what it really takes in terms of preparation. Probably a good comparison is to imagine to climb a mountain which takes 4 or more years to get to the summit. Not considering what it takes to get a medal.
A huge respect for all who made it and good luck for the games.
On photography side we also need a bit of preparation, ok I admit I got my accreditation already one year ago, not as challenging as athletes, however Olympic games are part of many dreams and there are many photographers who can’t be there.
My accreditation is a valid only for sailing and with the sailing venue so far away from the rest of the games we will see only see. The great thing is that we will be very close, actually closer than coaches or anybody else. During the races the TV and photographers are the only ones who can follow the sailors on the race course.
Shooting in in Weymouth specially on the outside race courses will be a wet job. The waves are big, mostly it rains and the gear is suffering quite hard. This conditions will be even more challenging for the “dry photographers ” non yachting photographers. This is something who happens on big events photographers who normally shoot soccer or other events will be around too.
To have the chance to work alongside with specialist from different areas is very interesting and helps to open the mind and get new ideas. Very impressive to see the speed the “typical” agency photographers have once back in the media center.
Cameras this year I will be working with a Nikon D800 and probably a D4, on the lens side I’m looking forward to work with the 200-400m zoom lens from Nikon. The D800 is a great camera and the over 30 megapixel are giving us a greater flexibility in the post production. The challenge will be the size of files, a 16GB card is full with 200 images.
This games will be much different than 4 years ago in China/Qingdao not only because of the weather, but also about the town. Qingdao was a 6 million city for China quite small but the infrastructure hotels etc. where simply available. The Marina had to be build not so in Weymouth Portland. The marina was there, the village and logistical places have to be build.
The hotels however are a bit of a tragedy and the prices for available beds whet up to the sky. 120 GBP for a bed and breakfast isn’t that a bit too much. I hope that the 50’000 habitats from the region will not be disappointed at the end.

2012 IS FULL ON…
Dear Friends
The 2012 is full on, and so the production of spectacular images. This days we released 2 sailing videos, following the successful start of last years videos production.
I never thought that filming can be so interesting and specially such a excellent way to share the passion for sailing and outdoor sports. This year beside sailing we are planning the production of a spectacular short mountaineering video which will be produced in the Alps in high altitude and thin air.
The elements is water as on the sea and the lakes, just in a different state; ice and snow. Probably the most precious resource on earth helping us survive and enjoy our outdoor sports sea & mountain.
This year most of the activities are focused on the 2012 Olympic Games. The Pure Passion Tour is planned for the fall after the Olympic Games, the plan is to bring home images and the emotions and share them with you.

World Yacht Racing Forum
A milestone in the world yacht racing industry
The first time in the history of sailing many of the key stakeholders of our industry found the way to Monaco to jointly discuss the future our industry. It never appeared to me clear that we are all part of big family and that we are all working in the same industry independent of the countries organizations or teams we belong.
Interesting session with great speakers talking about sponsorship, event management, and key elements driving the world yacht racing industry.
The sailing community is used to meet and come together for events but this is the first time all focused on exchanging ideas and discussion approaches how to improve our industry, networking without having a race to be sailed or organized.
The session about the future of the America’s cup didn’t brought any new hope for a fast resolution of the conflict between Alinghi and BMW Oracle. Paul Cayard Cleary outlined the more fundamental problem of the current situation. The Americas cup moved up to a new level in the last few editions and current management concept as described in the deed of gift does not allow a fast resolution of conflicts. Will and independent body improve this situation and how can this be put in place.
The economy slow down is not only a headline on the news but also having an impact on the founding of the events, teams etc. are this challenging times an opportunity to strengthen the world yacht racing industry. What is the value of an event investment, how can this be properly measured to what is the return of the investment and how is the industry positioned within other industries. It became clear that if well managed the sailing industry is capable of delivering a much higher return as mostly any other sport.
This was certainly the first step in to the right direction and I hope more of this will follow. There is one point who remain addressed only partially, out of the discussions became clear that in the eye of many large event organizers such as OC Events ISAF with his democratic approach is not able to fulfill their requirements.
What is going to happen, will the forum be an important platform for ISAF to better understand the needs of many professionals in this sailing marked or will it be even possible to contribute and cooperate on a different level.

my first swiss sailing calendar

When I came back from the Olympic games I found that it was quite a hard and intensive job to take images at the games but even harder is to choose 13 of the 9000 for a calendar. I don’t know how many times I did a new selection for this calendar but with some help from friends and also another sailing photographer Amory Ross now It’s done and I’m very happy with the outcome.
On the cover we find Nathalie Brugger, she fully deserves to be on the cover of the 2009 calendar.
For every calendar we sell we will pay 5 CHF to the youth development of Swiss Sailing, I like the idea to involve the youth in this project and with the calendars who are sold by the clubs even more money can be collected for our youth.
Like every project there are a few person who are key. Have to admit without the persistence of Daniel Wälti the chief redactor of Swiss Boat Yachting I would not have even started to seriously consider such a project. The calendar shows 13 images from all our Swiss sailors at the Olympic games, this is only possible thanks to Swiss Olympic who helped us with the authorization of IOC.

Xie Xie China
Xie Xie in mandarino significa grazie e si pronuncia “cie cie”, hanno dato tutto quello che potevano per trasformare queste Olimpiadi in una bella festa. Non per parlarne della cerimonia di chiusura che no ho vissuto in prima persona.
Sono sul viaggio di ritorno e mi sono fermato 2 giorni a Shanghai per vedere un po di China al di fuori dal villaggio Olimpico e di Qingdao. Sfortunatamente piove fortemente e cosi sono in albergo e scrivo un po.
Gli ultimi giorni a Qingdao erano particolarmente intensi, incominciando con la medal race di Flavio ed Enrico sulla Star: buona partenza, terzi alla boa di bolina, “ultimi” alla boa di poppa ed un recupero da eroi nella prossima bolina fino al secondo posto e poi finire sul scondo posto. La medaglia non ci e stata, gli punti persi nelle prime prove pesavano troppo pero bella prestazione. Bravi!!!
Il giorno della partenza da Qingdao era anche un po particolare. Dopo che gli Chinesi del centro stampa hanno scoperto che il mio volo era solo alle 23.00 non cera mezzo per evitare la cerminonia di chiusura di Qingdao, non so come mai ma dovevo scattare delle foto a tutti costi. Non mi dispiaceva perché gli unici fotografi rimasti era Carlo Borlenghi ed io cosi l’ho fatto assieme a Carlo.
Fino qui tutto bene, hanno organizzato tutta una serie di trasporti per fare in modo che la partenza dallo stadio, caricare le borse in albergo e poi portarmi in aeroporto doveva funzionare alla perfezione. Non fu cosi, l’ultimo trasporto era in ritardo e cosi ho perso la prima volta l’aereo. Per la manager (donna) del centro stampa era un disastro si e scusata in tutti modi possibili e quasi non osava più a guardarmi dalla vergogna. Pero quello che ne e uscito dopo era geniale.
Mi sono trovato in un vero KTV Chinese (Karaoke TV) con un gruppo di volontari del centro stampa e nel fra tempo mi hanno organizzato il nuovo volo, trasporto ed albergo per la notte.
Consequnza ho giocato una specie di indianata Chinese di birra con dei dadi tutta la notte con Chinesi nel KTV dove le ragezza del centro stampa continuavano a cantare in Chinese ed io bere Qingdao birra perche chairmente gli Chinesi erano piu bravi. Ogni tre po caraciavano la canzone “I am sailing I am sailing” per fare cantare pure me.
Per fortuna la nostra costituzione sopporta meglio l’ alcool dei Chinesi cosi ce l’ho fatta a sopravvivere più o meno bene la notte.
Il giorno dopo cioè un paio di ore dopo chiaramente mi hanno accompagnato in aereoporto. Stranamente mi hanno portato dritto all check in della first class, il resto si spiega da solo, peccato che il volo e durato poco meno di 2 ore.
Domani torno a casa per un fine settimana tranquillo perché il lunedì dopo si va a St. Moritz per il match race.

PS: Qui a Shanghai ho trovato un bar che si chiama “Locarno” ed ha il caffe “Chiocco d’oro” e gli spagetti carbonara sono mica male.

Questo nome tra un pò no lo posso piu sentire, tutti ne parlano e tutto gira attorno questo personaggio, sembra che sia il nuovo Paul Elvström. Per il momento però è Torben e Paul che hanno 5 medaglie e non Ben.
Oggi era in programma la medalrace degli Yngling e prima quella dei Finn, visto che devo scattare un po di foto di Sofia che è attualment terza e corre per difendere il suo titolo Olympico ero gia sull acqua prima, e mi sono vissutto tutta questa euforia di Ben Ainslie…..non ne posso più.
Per farla breve anche oggi il vento e mancato e la regta dei Finn e stata annullata dopo una lotteria che anche noi conosciamo bene sui nostri dai laghi, conseqenza: Sofia non ha corso e mi tocca rifare la stessa riscendere in campo domani.
Magari mi sto stancando un po da questi olympiadi. Mi alzo presto ogni mattina e scatto tutti giorni attorno alle 800 – 1000 foto e poi alla fine vado a letto quasi senza cena e sento in ogni frase almeno tre Ben Ainslie…..
Ieri invice era quasi una bella giornata, ero sul campo con le star, tutti non si aspettavano altro viso che corre il nostro equipaggio svizzero, speranza per una medaglia.
La meteo annunciava 10 – 12 nodi da nord con il vento che gira da 10 – 20 gradi a sinistra. Dopo un po di ritardi per il vento finalmente la partenza, bel vento, belle foto cielo blu i nostri in mezzo ai piu bravi. Un gruppo vira e va a destra, anche i nostri….Ahi, mi dico forse sinistra e meglio. Ma non erano soli cera anche Hemish Pettper, Robert Seidt etc. Invece Il Polacco e il tedesco Pickel che la sera prima era ancora in discoteca stanno a sinistra.
Alla boa e tutto chiaro la sinistra pagava talmente che devono poggiare sulla boa ed i nostri lontano dai primi nel secondo gruppo……altro sogno svizzero svanito? Non troppo presto.. infatti recuperano di brutto, la barca è semplicemente più veloce delle altre…bellissimo, alla fine sono dentro le medal race per il momento.
Adesso sono qui in un ristorante Chinese con degli amici Danesi e ci rendiamo conto che metà delle Olimpiadi è già trascorsa. Per fortuna, perchè ho già 30 GB di foto sul disco e il sito bello pieno di belle foto…almneo penso, e poi tra un pò non so più cosa inventarmi.
Dalla perte del “Rules Advisor” invece non ho molto da fare per il momento, però può cambiare molto velocemente se Marazzi entra nei primi.
L’altro giorno ho incontrato Ewan, ervamo tutti e due in discussione come rules advisor per i Chinesi, ovviamente ho prefertito prendere i nostri. Lui ha avuto 3 proteste e le ha perse tutte fino ad ora, non era molto felice.
Penso che posso essere contento con il mio OCS perso, tanto é poco probabile che alle Olimpiadi i giudici consierano una richiesta di riparatzione per un OCS uccidendo la credibilità del race officer.
Da domini in avati vorrei incominciare a diventare un pò creativo con le immagini, tanto la parte formale é fatta..vediamo cosa ne uscirà… sperando che non ci siano troppe proteste!
Prima di salutare volevo ancora scrivere dei “Kinder Bueno”, ne abbiamo ricevuti talmete tanti che non riusciamo a mangirli tutti da soli, così tutte le mattine porto un cartone o due al centro stampa. Consequenza: tutti giornalisti e fotografi mangiano Kinder Bueno e uno dei manager del centro stampa é un pò nervoso perché chiaramente la Ferrero non é un sponsor o fornitore ufficiale….
Ora pago il conto in questo ristorante chinese e poi vado a dormire

Sorprese cinesi: l’arrivo
Certo che il viaggio per Qingdao è iniziato con un po’ di pregiudizi. Forse anche per quel che ho letto e sentito in questi giorni sui media sulla situazione in Cina e sull’effetto che le Olimpiadi potrebbero avere sul governo.
Al mio arrivo all’aeroporto di Sanghai, tra l’altro in Business upgrade da mi fermano subito in dogana per la mia borsa foto. E qui mi sono detto: ci siamo. ”Sir you need this form, Sir we havo our rules….Sir you have to waith”. Beh non e una sopresa o mi stavo sbagliando.
L’impiegata della dogana non solo mi ha portato una bevanda fresca e biscotti ma mi ha anche accompagnato allo Starbucks (fuori dalla dogana) in attesa che arrivasse il fax necessario per l’importazione temporanea del mio materiale fotografico. Ma non era finita qui. Al check-in successivo, con la mia accreditation card al collo, mi sono trovato circondato da cinesi che volevano una foto, firme etc….”sorry I’m not famous” gli ho detta ma non ne volevano sapere.
All’arrivo a Qingdao, come ogni tanto succede, la mia valigia non era sul nastro, ma c’erano almeno 5 persone che si sono date da fare per rintracciare il mio bagaglio promettendomi che se non l’avessero trovato mi sarebbe stato recapitato il giorno dopo al mio. Insomma qui si stanno dando da fare in tutti i modi per risolvere i problemi e rendere piacevole il nostro soggiorno.
Palma is over next step is China
The days here in Palma where special, Coppa el Rey is a amazing event with a high level competitors. Every time I’m sailing in this event I’m learning a lot this year was about Farr 40 sailing specially the mainsail trim on this boat.
On our race course we also had the two VOR 70 TELEFONICA racing and getting ready for the Volovo Ocean Race, amazin the speed of the canting keel yachts.
Another phenomena here in Palma is how late it get every evening, it almost seems a mission impossible to go for dinner before 9 and forget being out of the restaurant before 12. So it’s hard to be back home before 2 am but guess what I’m not half as tiered if I would do this at home.
Some say that the island Ibiza and Palma have a special energy…must be.
Yesterday when we left the harbor I finally managed to take a picture I was thinking of for quite some time. I like here lines if you look at it from the bow..
