100 Days until the Start of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup
Today marks 100 days until the regatta for the oldest sporting trophy, the America's Cup, begins. This will be my fourth America's Cup, a competition I have followed since my early childhood. As children, we would sit in front of the television late into the night, eager to learn more and more.
My journey took an exciting turn the day I received a phone call and flew to Auckland, deepening my connection to the event. The America's Cup is more than just photos; it's a voyage through the history of the oldest sporting trophy on the planet. It embodies sailing, the sea, friendships, design, innovation, disappointment, sorrow, and joy. It is, simple:
An addictive passion.
This year, I have the pleasure of collaborating with Swiss Nautical Lifestyle Magazine Wave to write a series of well-researched articles loaded with insider information and expert opinions. We will be closely following the journey to the next America's Cup until the winner is declared. As famously stated in the waters of the Solent in 1851:
"Your Majesty, there is no second."
In our first article, we revisited the beginning in 1851, examined the Deed of Gift, and reviewed the current protocol that defines the modern America's Cup. With all the boats now launched, we offer a first glimpse at the new vessels and their teams.
There's an old expression:
"The fastest boat wins."
This doesn't undermine the sailors’ importance—they are crucial. Given that all competitors are outstanding, it often boils down to the fastest boat in the end.
Join me on this journey as the 37th edition of the America's Cup will be sailed in Europe in Barcelona. Our Swiss team, Alinghi, is back and they are looking strong.
