First 365 Days with Glaciers.Today
A year ago, we installed two cameras on the Diavolezza. Our aim was to document the effects of climate change on the glaciers and show these images live to a wider audience and we reached over 60 million people.
Much more has happened. The SAR mountain rescuers now often refer to the images, as the resolution allows them to plan their rescue operations better than before.
But even more: nature shows facets that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams. The cameras captured everything - solar storms, night skies, and lights that we have rarely seen before.
We have weathered the storms and the technology is working perfectly - proof of concept. Now we can go one step further and explore other areas. We are completely "powered by the sun".
The cameras take pictures reliably, every half hour, we just have to select and learn what nature shows us.
As the initiator of Glaciers.today, I want to think further, beyond borders. Why not in the Himalayan region? Now it's time to plan the next step.
In the first year, we have seen nature in a way we could never have imagined, and our cameras have become a valuable tool for science and safety. Jürg Kaufmann
